Biography
Ann Meade is Scottish. As a child she lived in India where her father was a cartographer for the British Survey of India. When he died the family returned to Scotland where her education included a Higher Leaving Certificate at Saint Columbus School, Kilmacolm, and a Diploma of Art from Glasgow School of Art. There she studied drawing and painting, history of art, mosaics and fresco painting.
In 1960 she moved to the Spanish Balearic Island of Menorca where she raised her five children. In Menorca she was co-owner of the gallery Na Fraix. She also taught art and English, designed ethnic-based clothing for an American boutique, and made mosaics for churches and private homes. During her years in Menorca she continued to paint and exhibit her work.
In 1976 Ann moved to the United States where she taught oil painting and drawing at Western Michigan University and the Kalamazoo Institute of Art. She was also Artist in Residence for two years at Hope College in Michigan. She presented symposia on The Unusual Use of Water Colour, and gave talks to historical societies and art schools throughout the state on The History of Colour from Prehistoric Times to the Present. In the United States, she continued to create mosaics and her mosaic baptismal pool is a significant feature of the Cathedral of Saint Augustine in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
In 1980 Ann and her husband Neill Sanders, a French horn player, founded the Fontana Festival of Art and Music in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which combined exhibitions of art with chamber music performances. This society still exists under the name of Fontana Chamber Arts.
She has won awards for her work in Scotland, Spain and the United States. Ann's paintings have been exhibited in Scotland, England, Spain, the United States, and Sweden. Her works are also in public and private collections in Scotland, England, Spain, the United States, France, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Germany, and Australia. She has taken part in over fifty group shows, and has had over 25 one-person exhibitions.
In 2009 Ann was invited to present a solo exhibition at Queens University, North Carolina, in the United States. Also the Royal Glasgow Institute of Art accepted a painting to be exhibited in their annual exhibition.
Ann now spends her time living and painting in Scotland and Spain.
